Spectator behaviour at community sporting events has become an increasingly topical issue, attracting both media interest and community concern. The damage that inappropriate spectator behaviour can cause to sport is too great for the issue to be ignored. Many sports are taking steps to reduce the likelihood of inappropriate behaviour occurring.
Sports and their clubs have a responsibility to provide a safe environment for all those involved in the conduct of the sport – players, officials, administrators and spectators. This includes taking steps to ensure everyone is protected from physical and emotional harm that may arise as a result of the inappropriate behaviour of others.
vicsport researched and prepared the paper titled, 'Spectator Behaviour Project - Legal Jurisdiction', (click here) that discusses the various legal implications faced by sports and ways sports can bring spectator behaviour within their jurisdiction.
The Department of Planning and Community Development have also supported and developed various initiatives including 'Encourage the kids, support the game' involving appropriate spectator behaviour. Information, tool kits and resources can be viewed and downloaded here
